There is an opportunity to transform Kingsway to create Melbourne’s best outdoor dining precinct.
Council is proposing to remove the existing 99 kerbside car parks on either side of Kingsway and replace this with widened footpaths to promote an amazing outdoor dining experience throughout the strip. Car parking will continue to be available on Kingsway down the centre median strip.
We are not proposing that cars be removed entirely from Kingsway at this stage, but rather that pedestrians and outdoor dining along Kingsway take precedence instead of the current car dominance. This will enable footpaths to be extended and the entire strip to be given a facelift to make it much more attractive and welcoming. No changes will occur to Kingsway until a new car park is built and operational so no car parks are lost.
This is consistent with the adopted Glen Waverley Activity Centre Structure Plan which provides for:
- significant improvements to the pedestrian environment of Kingsway so as to further develop the precinct as one of Melbourne’s premier food and entertainment destinations; and
- the development of consolidated parking facilities at the western edge of the activity centre, rather than providing parking requirements within the core of activity centre.
The improvements proposed for Kingsway include the widening of footpaths and a reduction in the number and prominence of cars and kerbside car parking on Kingsway. This means that the existing car parking in Kingsway needs to be relocated elsewhere in the Centre.
Given that Council is currently planning to construct a new multi deck car park in the heart of the activity centre, it is opportune to also include the Kingsway kerbside spaces in the new multi deck parking structure now to
simultaneously realise the transformation of Kingsway towards more of a pedestrian and outdoor dining focus.
