I’m pleased to report that Council made an important decision at our last Council meeting to replace our ageing and inefficient street lighting throughout the city with energy efficient lighting.
This will significantly reduce our carbon emissions and energy costs in coming years.
The cost of the project is estimated to be $3.3 million, however this investment will be paid back within six years through the projected energy savings it will produce.
This project is a no-brainer on both environmental and financial grounds – delivering the following benefits:
- saving Council $14.1 million in energy costs through to 2031;
- reducing Council’s carbon footprint by 18%;
- reducing Council’s energy consumption on street lighting by 65%; and
- producing better quality street lighting – including more uniform light and lower glare.
Regardless of your opinion on climate change, this project will save Council significant money into the future. This is money which Council will be able to redirect to other areas.
