As part of Council’s endorsement of my plan to transform Kingsway, Council is currently preparing a suite of design guidelines for the redevelopment and rejuvenation of Kingsway. This will provide a major facelift for Kingsway to transform it into an iconic destination for outdoor dining, cafes and vibrant activity.
Kingsway is a great place to visit but it has the potential to be even better. The street furniture is old, the footpath paving is unremarkable and in places around the activity centre the lighting is poor. The transforming Kingsway project offers an opportunity to re-do all of these ‘place making’ features from the ground up to give a contemporary look and feel and so everything is connected and in harmony.
Council’s plans include replacement street furniture, new street lighting, new plantings and new paving. It will compliment the footpath widening transformation works planned for Kingsway and Council’s plans to make Kingsway more pedestrian and people friendly.
Stage 1 will deliver detailed schematic plans and an associated design manual to guide the process of streetscape and infrastructure renewal works within the activity centre. This will then be considered as part of Council’s budget process and consulted upon with traders, stakeholders and residents so everyone can have input into shaping the future of Kingsway.
