Council is currently in the middle of a Request for Proposal process with five shortlisted bidders to create a town square/public plaza in the heart of Glen Waverley on the Central Car Park site.
This is a project Council has been working on for more than five years and aims to deliver upon the vision set in the Glen Waverley Activity Centre Master Plan. A public plaza the size of the city square in Melbourne’s CBD together with a new library are key elements of this project. These new public spaces in the heart of Kingsway opposite the Glen Waverley Train Station are key components of Council’s plans to transform Kingsway over the coming years.
The Central Car Park site is a premier location in Glen Waverley. Council wants to use the central location of this site to establish the community precinct which Glen Waverley has always lacked, but has always deserved.
Adjacent to Kingsway, and opposite the train station, we see a terrific opportunity to build a town square that will be a meeting place for anyone who uses Glen Waverley – a place for people to eat lunch, meet friends, reflect or just catch some sun.
Hi Geoff! What happened to this plan i wonder? Sounds interesting except for adding yet another car parking.. i hope one day council removes all car parkings there, make kingsway a pedestrian street blocking cars from entering; and replaces the car parkings with open green spaces with designated bike lanes and topping the mixing more businesses like adding a farmer’s market,
Hi Samar, thanks for commenting. The plan to transform Kingsway into a pedestrian friendly and outdoor eating area is still progressing. The plan is to commence once the new car park to be built.
