New car parking for Kingsway

New car parking for Kingsway

Let’s face it – everyone in Glen Waverley has experienced how hard it can be to get a car park in the Glen Waverley Activity Centre – especially after 6.00 pm at night. This problem is only getting worse as the popularity of the Glen Waverley Activity Centre continues to soar.

As the chair of Council’s Glen Waverley Activity Centre Steering Committee I have led the development of a radical plan to make parking issues a thing of the past in Glen Waverley with a new 800 to 1,200 space multi deck car park on Montclair Avenue in the heart of the Kingsway precinct.  This new car park will future-proof Glen Waverley from current car parking pressures for many years to come. It will set Glen Waverley apart from other activity centres in Melbourne by ensuring ample FREE car parking is available to everyone who visits Glen Waverley.

I presented this plan to the 30 August 2016 Council meeting following consultation with traders and stakeholders in Glen Waverley and it was endorsed by Council.

A free new public car park of such size is practically unheard of in busy entertainment areas where visitors trawling the streets looking for a park is a constant feature. But we want to change that.

Our vision for Glen Waverley is for it to be a place where anyone can visit with confidence of immediately getting a car park close to the action every single time.

Council is excited about the potential of this project to transform Glen Waverley. Any visitor to Glen Waverley knows how hard it can be to find a car park during peak times. This new car park will fix that and improve the experience for all visitors to Glen Waverley. It will also be a massive boost to traders in the centre and responds to the frequent calls by the Glen Waverley Traders’ Association for a new car park to be built in Glen Waverley.

img_0954The Glen Waverley Structure Plan identifies the potential development of multi deck car parking on the edge of the centre.  The most logical place is on the existing car park known as Glendale West.

While it is still early days in planning for this project, I believe the proposed new car park may be able to be delivered on a cost neutral basis for Council using past and future trader car parking contributions and the sale of the existing car park located east of Glendale Street.

This existing car park known as the Glendale East Car Park and bound by Glendale Street, Montclair Avenue and to the south of the Waverley RSL is underutilised, surplus to needs and its value is greater that at grade car park.  It has the potential to help fund the new car park and Kingsway transformation.

Traders have contributed approximately $8 million towards the project based on contributions required under Council’s Parking Overlay 3 which collects contributions from developers to assist in funding the provision of additional car parking in the Centre.

This is an ambitious plan for the future of Glen Waverley and I invite you to have your say on what you think to help us refine our plans for the new car park and for creating a new Kingsway streetscape. For more details and to have your say, please click here to complete Council’s short survey.
